Ways to increase your income as a nurse
I always suggest finding the leaks in your account before finding more money. This is not to say that you need to start sacrificing anything, but instead looking at what you pay for that you do not use, such as subscriptions.
BUT if you are trying to increase your income as a nurse and not work overtime, try these!
1. Work weekends for the shift differential
Working weekends is not always ideal, but the differential can make all the difference in your budget.
2. Take advantage of night shift differential
This could take a little getting used to, but once you get a rhythm it can be really great especially when that differential hits your bank account.
3. Get certified in your specialty
4. Participate in the clinical ladder if they have it
Use the time you are working for professional development where applicable. You can then use this to leverage more income when you have a more advanced skill set!
5. Precept or charge
If a differential is offered and they are looking for preceptors or charges, volunteer! This gives you the opportunity to earn some extra money while also teaching your potential new coworker the ropes.
6. Negotiate when you get hired
Most places, both in healthcare and not, will always offer what they would like to pay, not necessarily the amount they can pay. You know your value and your work ethic, do not be scared to ask for compensation that matches your productivity.
7. Travel nurse
You’ll be able to make more money working less shifts! It is also possible to do local travel nursing staying close to home! (Stay tuned for a whole blog post about local travel nursing)
