Why I chose local travel nursing!
My jump into travel nursing has been something I had contemplated for years, but as life happens sometimes things fall by the wayside.
Then, I felt like I was given a second chance when my life started over after my divorce, but I still had so many excuses as to why I shouldn’t start traveling.
I liked my job, I had great hours, the pay was good and I could pick up when I wanted to.
In February of this year I finally decided to make the leap and look into travel nursing jobs! A few jobs fell through and a local hospital posted a job around the time I was looking. I reached out to my recruiter and asked if he would submit me if they took local travelers.
So what exactly is a local traveler?
It is a nurse that takes a travel job who lives in the area. Please talk to your CPA before you take stipends (there is NO such thing as the 50 mile rule). My job now is about 20 miles from my tax home. (This is what makes me local)
If you are wanting the benefits of traveling while still living at home, this may be an option for you!
How do you become a local travel nurse?
First, connect with a recruiter OR there are some hospitals now offering internal travel positions.
Next, Ask what the pay is.
Sometimes the hourly rate varies and is a little lower than the out of state travelers because they are getting a stipend. You will have a higher hourly rate but it should be similar to the blended rate.
The benefits of local traveling include trying out hospitals in your area, feeling tied to the community while still making great money, getting to sleep in your own bed and not having to duplicate expenses.
